ABSTRACT Mining operations face increasing variability, complexity, and performance pressure. Automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and Integrated Remote Operations Centres (IROCs) are increasingly being deployed to improve operational decision-making, safety, and value-chain performance. This paper explores how AI-enabled decision orchestration, combined with new operating models and physical collaboration environments, is transforming how mining organizations detect disturbances, evaluate options, and execute optimal responses. Drawing on industry benchmarks and real-world applications across mining value chains, the paper demonstrates that value is not delivered by technology alone, but by integrating people, process, governance, and execution into a holistic operating model. The role of next-generation IROCs as innovation acceleration hubs for AI adoption is examined in the context of the global challenge to deliver the minerals the world urgently needs faster, smarter, and more responsibly, as called for by the World Mining Congress. Introduction In the context of the global challenge to deliver the minerals required for the energy transition and broader economic development—faster, smarter, and more responsibly—mining organizations must fundamentally improve how they detect variability, make decisions, and execute plans. Rising demand, constrained capital, increasing societal expectations, and workforce volatility are exposing the limitations of traditional operating models. This paper responds directly to the World Mining Congress call to action by demonstrating how digitally enabled operating models that combine artificial intelligence, automation, and Integrated Remote Operations Centres (IROCs) can improve productivity, safety, capital efficiency, and social license outcomes when deployed at scale. Mining is inherently variable. Orebody uncertainty, equipment reliability, weather, and market dynamics combine to create highly dynamic operating environments. Traditional operating models, characterized by siloed decision-making and delayed responses, struggle to cope with this variability, resulting in lost value, safety exposure, and poor plan compliance. Recent advances in automation, AI, and systems integration are enabling a step change in how mining organizations manage this variability. Central to this shift is the evolution of IROCs from monitoring and control facilities into decision optimization hubs. 2. Variability and In-Shift Decision-Making Operational performance in mining is shaped by continuous variability. The quality of inshift decisions largely determines how effectively this variability is managed.
