Agarwal1 1SYMX.AI, Canada, (*Presenting author: info@symx.ai) ABSTRACT Underground mining operations are increasingly dependent on digital infrastructure for remote operations, automation, safety systems, and production monitoring. However, many mines still deploy digital technologies as isolated systems rather than integrated operational platforms. This paper introduces the concept of an “Operating System of Intelligence” for underground mining, defined as a layered digital architecture that integrates industrial IoT sensing, resilient connectivity, unified data platforms, and AI-driven analytics to optimize fuel, maintenance, and production. The proposed framework outlines five layers: sensing and telemetry, connectivity, data integration, analytics and applications, and governance and performance management. Particular emphasis is placed on underground connectivity architectures that combine private LTE, mesh WiFi, and other communication technologies to enable real-time monitoring and control. The paper further examines three primary application areas: fuel analytics for cost and emissions reduction, predictive maintenance for reducing downtime and maintenance costs, and production analytics for system-level optimization of underground operations. The paper concludes by presenting a staged implementation roadmap and argues that integrated digital operating systems will form the foundation of future autonomous and intelligent underground mines, enabling continuous operational improvement across productivity, cost, safety, and environmental performance.
