It carries the full weight of the rotating assembly and operating charge, while accommodating significant forces generated by the drive system. Although vertical loading is predominant, axial and lateral loads are also significant and must be considered in the design. Consequently, overall mill availability is heavily dependent on the integrity and reliability of the bearing system. The most significant impact on bearing reliability can be attributed to appropriate bearing technology selection. An array of bearing types and technologies are commonly used in grinding mill applications: • Spherical roller bearings • Hydrodynamic sleeve bearings • Hydrostatic sleeve bearings • Hydrodynamic pad bearings • Hydrostatic pad bearings The bearing technologies presented above are listed in order of their maximum load carrying capacity. A selection of the most utilized bearing technologies, along with typically recommended application ranges, are illustrated in Figure 4.
