The project posed a significant challenge not only due to the geographical conditions for its execution but also due to the need to enhance value in its delivery to improve satisfaction for the internal client or O&M user. This was particularly important given the background of similar brownfield projects delivered with high OpEx, poor maintainability, low reliability in construction timelines, and frequent safety incidents. a) Key Client or Project Objectives The project needed to ensure satisfaction from the O&M user to guarantee operational sustainability under new conditions in the crushing area: reducing crushing time from 22 to 16 hours per day. The goal was to achieve over 95% satisfaction from the O&M user and meet the intermediate milestone of delivering Basic and Detailed Engineering by 30 November 2020, providing a high-value, safe, and optimal simulation for the pre-construction, construction, and O&M stages. b) Role of VDC in Achieving Objectives VDC’s primary role in achieving these objectives was to establish a collaborative project management methodology with key stakeholders, particularly through early involvement of the O&M user in ICE sessions and the use of the BIM model in synergy with PPM. This approach improved preliminary design processes during Basic Engineering (BE) through an O&M lens and 4D BIM Planning during Detailed Engineering (DE) through a constructability lens. c) Major Gaps Between Current and Required Performance A diagnostic of similar past projects during the Basic and Detailed Engineering stages revealed siloed work practices, with isolated meetings between project teams and users or designers, and no collaboration or alignment with Project and Client objectives. There was also a lack of training in BIM/PPM and ICE. d) Main Challenges in Achieving the Objectives Managing change within a mining sector where projects are not considered part of the organisation’s core business. Securing the participation of a potential Construction Contractor in ICE sessions for both Basic and Detailed Engineering, in order to enhance the performance of VDC objectives.
