6.2 Carbon Footprint and Social License The carbon intensity of tailings management is linked directly to energy consumption in pumping, thickening, and filtration—itself a function of tailings density and circuit configuration. By increasing tailings density and optimizing dewatering circuit performance, MT4.0 reduces both the direct energy consumption of tailings handling and the indirect emissions associated with freshwater treatment and supply. Operations targeting Science Based Targets for scope 1 and scope 2 emissions reduction will find that tailings circuit optimization, when combined with renewable energy procurement, can contribute meaningfully to their decarbonization roadmaps (IPCC, 2018). Social license considerations in tailings management have been transformed by highprofile TSF failures in Brazil, Chile, and elsewhere. Communities adjacent to TSFs increasingly demand transparency about water management practices, geotechnical monitoring data, and emergency response preparedness. The real-time monitoring and remote reporting capabilities of Metso Metrics, combined with structured community engagement around MT4.0 implementation, enable mining operations to demonstrate proactive, data-driven stewardship of tailings facilities— shifting the community narrative from fear of catastrophic failure to confidence in responsible management (Franks et al., 2014). 7. EMPIRICAL RESULTS FROM LATIN AMERICAN IMPLEMENTATIONS The MT4.0 framework and Metso technology portfolio have been implemented across four mining operations in Chile and Peru—two large open-pit copper operations and two gold-silver polymetallic underground mines—over the period 2019–2024.
