137 Despite technological advances, significant monitoring challenges remain, with current systems covering less than 10% of potential contamination sources at typical mining operations [23]. Spatial and Temporal Coverage Traditional sampling approaches provide limited spatial and temporal coverage, with typical monitoring networks covering 0.1-1% of total site area and sampling frequencies of weekly to monthly [23]. Current monitoring systems often detect contamination after significant environmental impact has occurred, with detection delays of 6 months to 2 years for groundwater contamination [23]. Comprehensive monitoring programs require substantial resources, with annual monitoring costs ranging from $100,000 to $2 million per site, creating trade-offs between monitoring intensity and cost-effectiveness [23]. Some of these barriers include high capital costs for advanced treatment systems. Uncertain return on investment for long-term benefits with long payback periods, and limited access to financing for innovative technologies. Technical Barriers such as complexity of integrated systems and limited local technical expertise as well as technology reliability in harsh mining environments are also considered challenging.
