Track 3: Environmental Stewardship

240 Figure 1 - Trolley system installed on the main haulage ramp © VA Erzberg Gmbh The ongoing effort is to convert 100 t payload dump trucks with battery driven power trains so that they can operate both on trolley as well as independently. The change from diesel engines to electrically powered mining equipment increases the energy efficiency by a factor of around 2.5 and gives corresponding savings of energy costs. Significant environmental benefits are the reduction of air pollutants and of noise. KEYWORDS Open pit, Erzberg, haulage, mobile mining equipment, electrification, trolley, battery 1. CONTEXT AND PROBLEM STATEMENT VA Erzberg GmbH introduced trolley assisted haulage on three main ramps in 2019 with an up-to-date length of total 5.1 km. Two 500 m ramps lead from the lowest bench to the primary crushers. The third ramp, which is 4.1 km long, leads from 770 m a.s.l. to the waste dump heap level of 1100 m a.s.l. With these installations all loaded uphill haulage is covered.
