CONTEXT AND PROBLEM STATEMENT 1.1 Mining, Biodiversity, and the Need for Measurable Environmental Outcomes Global demand for minerals and raw materials continues to increase as societies pursue energy transition, infrastructure development, and technological growth. At the same time, mining activities exert significant pressure on natural ecosystems, biodiversity, and land use. It is estimated that mining influences more than 50 million square kilometers globally, with approximately 8% overlapping protected areas, 7% Key Biodiversity Areas, and 16% wilderness regions (Sonter et al., 2020). These figures highlight the scale at which mining intersects with sensitive environments and underscore the importance of effective reclamation planning, environmental management, and transparent reporting throughout the mine life cycle. Mining activities frequently intersect with complex and sensitive environments, placing the sector at the center of growing regulatory, societal, and environmental expectations. Regulatory frameworks are evolving to require not only impact mitigation but also the measurement, monitoring, and disclosure of biodiversity-related impacts and restoration performance across the full mining lifecycle, from exploration through operations and reclamation. The concern is quickly moving up on priority for leadership as environmental management can directly impact the “license to operate” for many mines these days. Despite these requirements, environmental monitoring practices often remain fragmented and episodic, limiting the ability of operators to consistently track ecological change, compare conditions across sites, or integrate environmental considerations into operational decisionmaking. This constrains the effective use of environmental data for restoration planning and reporting and reduces confidence in demonstrated outcomes. There is therefore a growing need for scalable, consistent, and geographically specific approaches that enable environmental conditions to be measured and monitored in a structured manner, supporting both regulatory compliance and informed decision-making while providing a credible basis for demonstrating environmental performance. 2. INDUSTRY CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY 2.1 Reframing Environmental Monitoring as an Operational Opportunity Environmental monitoring in the mining sector has traditionally been treated as a regulatory compliance requirement rather than as a core operational input. Monitoring programs are often designed to satisfy permitting and reporting obligations, with limited integration into production planning, restoration strategies, or long-term land management, reducing their ability to actively inform decision-making.
