Track 4: Coal

135 Above short introduction on different aspects related to VAM should give any-one better understanding of major obstacles created mainly by the specific environment of underground coal mines under operation, which prevent wider/common implementation of existing VAM utilisation technologies in the coal mines. As emphasized above there are four major obstacles, which create unfavourable conditions for efficient implementation of VAM utilisation technologies: • Variable VAM flow rate • Low methane content • Humidity • Dust load Unfortunately, either individually or jointly they effectively prevent implementation of VAM utilisation technologies in EU underground gassy coal mines (approximately at least in 23 of them). Considering above, in order to achieve the challenging target of huge GHGs’ emissions mitigation by effectively handling VAM emissions the consortium of ProVAM research and development project decided to test these four critical factors. If successful in this application, targeted task will be performed according to the best available R&D standards through complex identification of the phenomena in in-situ conditions first, then modelling of certain recognized harmful processes, modelling and testing of different reactors’ efficient operation in unfavourable mine conditions, verification of models in in-situ conditions of GIG’s Experimental Mine Barbara. In detail, the ProVAM project will be realised by implementation of below work packages: • Elaboration of the assumptions and guidelines for VAM utilization • Development of a model and simulation of the operation of a VAM utilization installation • Selection of VAM utilization method • Research and validation of the operation of VAM utilization installation under experimental mine conditions • Risk assessment, ecoefficiency analysis and business case study • Coordination, dissemination and conclusions
