153 Figure 7 - Methane at JSW in 2020-2024 [kilotons] This programme is based on two pillars: • Increasing the efficiency of methane drainage up to 50% – capturing 50% of the methane released during mining by the methane drainage system. • 95% utilization of methane captured by the methane drainage system – maximum utilization of methane for energy production, as dictated by technological constraints. The Methane Emission Reduction Programme was developed with the participation of the Central Mining Institute – National Research Institute and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and is currently being implemented at all JSW S.A. plants. The basic projects carried out under the programme include: modernization of methane drainage stations, construction and modernization of underground methane drainage systems, sealing of post-mining isolation dams, drilling of drainage holes for post-mining goafs in closed mine areas, and expansion of infrastructure related to the use of captured methane. A specific change in thinking among JSW's management and employees was important, consisting in changing the awareness that methane is not only a direct threat to their lives and health, that it contributes to global warming, but that it is also a valuable energy resource. Therefore, all measures should be taken to capture the methane released during mining with a methane drainage system and use it for energy production. Among the many projects implemented as part of the Methane Emission Reduction Programme, four have received funding from the European Union. These are the REM, MASTERMINE, ProVAM and METH2GEN projects.
