52 mechanisms, including board-level oversight, statutory audits, sustainability reporting, and grievance redressal systems, to ensure transparency and accountability. ESG performance indicators are increasingly integrated into corporate decision-making and reporting in accordance with global sustainability disclosure standards, thereby strengthening investor confidence and reinforcing CIL’s commitment to responsible mining and sustainable development. 7. CONCLUSION Coal India Limited demonstrates that large-scale coal mining operations can progressively transition towards sustainability through the integration of structured environmental management systems, adoption of advanced and cleaner mining technologies, and implementation of a robust ESG governance framework. By aligning its operational practices with ICMM Sustainable Development Principles and contributing to the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goals 7, 12, 13, and 15, CIL illustrates how resource-intensive industries can balance energy security with environmental protection and social responsibility. The convergence of CIL’s performance with global best practices – evidenced through progressive mine reclamation, renewable energy integration, pollution control, and transparent sustainability disclosures – reinforces the role of large public-sector mining enterprises in supporting national climate commitments while advancing sustainable industrial development.
