Partner and country manager for Perú and Ecuador at ERM. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ABSTRACT Amidst the global energy transition, the mining industry faces the triple challenge of meeting an increasing demand for critical minerals while addressing increasing pressures for nature-related financial disclosure and addressing social conflicts around projects. This paper proposes a "win-win-win solution" (w3solution) that integrates biodiversity as a key financial variable to de-risk projects, enhance social license, and attract sustainable investment. Drawing on 20 years of success from the Camisea Project’s Biodiversity Monitoring Program (PMB) in the Peruvian Amazon, the study demonstrates how scientific data—collected via innovative technologies like camera traps and acoustic sensors—can be translated into strategic financial metrics. Considering PMB results (such as a 3% reduction in operational footprint and stable high-value species richness) against international standards like IFC Performance Standard 6 (PS6) and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the paper illustrates a clear pathway for the mining sector in the following years. The methodology, inspired by the TNFD's LEAP approach, emphasizes three pillars: (i) defining clear Nature-Positive KPIs aligned with ICMM goals; (ii) implementing operative field standards to manage ecosystem services; and (iii) adopting TNFD as an umbrella for transparency. Results show that such a framework not only reduces future environmental liabilities and CAPEX/OPEX risks but also fosters deep local engagement by revaluing biodiversity as a shared asset between the company and indigenous communities. The paper concludes that a strategic biodiversity management system is no longer optional but imperative for ensuring capital survival and leaving a positive legacy in the global south. Peru´s GDP grew 7% yearly after Camisea turned on and became the Peruvian Miracle in 2009. This wouldn’t have happened if Pluspetrol hadn’t fulfilled IADB´s requirements for financing.
