OFFICIAL It is therefore a conservative system but given the severe potential consequences of reactive ground events the instrument provides a credible worst-case environment. The ARC thermal studies provide important kinetic data that can be used in heat transfer models to describe specific applications. Accelerating rate calorimeters have an Iso-aging mode that is an adiabatic test, meaning that there is no heat loss to the environment. This is achieved by having a precisely controlled electric furnace that holds a test sample at a defined temperature and monitors the sample temperature. If the sample self-heats the furnace matches the temperature of the environment to the sample so that there is no heat transfer from the sample. Accelerate Rate Calorimetry is a very sensitive calorimetric tool for thermal safety testing (Stoessel, 2008), but the equipment is expensive, not widely available and requires specialist expertise to operate. 3.Results Laboratory Test Outcomes – Induction Times vs. Inhibitor Content Over the course of the project, dozens of isothermal tests were conducted at different inhibitor levels for each of the samples. Samples were preselected to be the most reactive available and covered diverse geology. Table 1 illustrates the general trend observed, Figure 7: Adapted ARC apparatus showing key measurement points, heaters and visible sample bomb, noting the bomb is a sealed system (ASTM, 2022).
