The convergence is strategic and urgent: Latin America is the global epicentre of critical mineral production for the energy transition, while simultaneously facing high operating costs (energy representing ~33% of OPEX) and ambitious decarbonisation targets. Considering that comminution accounts for up to 53% of this energy consumption and that optimised blasting can reduce it by up to 29%, the savings potential at an operation with an energy cost of USD 50 million/year lies in the range of USD 7–15 million/year, without equipment modification or asset expansion. At regional scale, considering the dozens of large copper, iron and lithium operations across Latin America, the aggregate impact of this transformation is in the order of billions of dollars annually and millions of tonnes of CO₂ avoided. The critical resource to achieve this objective is not technological: it is human. Professionals with systemic vision and integrated mastery of the pit-to-plant chain are the most strategic asset Latin American mining can develop.
