Track 7: Andean Flagship Sessions

5. DISCUSSION Geothermal integration transcends electrical substitution, consolidating itself as a security vector resolving the water-energy nexus. Our results ($65.64 USD/MWh) coincide with IRENA (2023) in positioning geothermal as the most stable renewable against fossil volatility. Thermal Synergy and Operational Security: Resource thermodynamics allow for "cascading use". In Milling, it provides base load (>95% PF) eliminating diesel backup. In high-altitude Leaching, it maintains solution at 20–25°C, doubling reaction kinetics according to Arrhenius and replicating the success of the Lihir mine (Melaku et al., 1995). Furthermore, it optimizes Electro-winning and Ventilation under sustainable mining principles (Bayer et al., 2013), while residual fluid enables local agriculture (Shortall et al., 2015). Its 95% Plant Factor (Lund & Toth, 2021) provides critical inertia and frequency stability superior to solar (Matek et al., 2016), eliminating the need for massive storage (BESS). Regional Strategies and Roadmap: Two symbiosis models are validated: the Southern Geothermal Hub (Moquegua-Tacna) complementing wind energy (DiPippo, 2016), and the Integral Replacement for Cerro Verde (Arequipa). Implementation must follow the staged "Asian Model" (Gehringer & Loksha, 2012): 50-60 MW modules, PPA contracts for bankability, and validation via slim holes to mitigate capital risk. Technical Challenges and Risk Mitigation: The use of 3D Magnetotellurics reduces drilling uncertainty (Gonzales, 2025). Limitations: Deep drilling is required to confirm enthalpy and ensure sustainable reinjection. Resource Model Limitations: Resource estimates rely solely on surface data, lacking deep drilling confirmation (>1,500 m) to prove commercial permeability. Consequently, potential is classified as 'Inferred Resources' rather than 'Proven Reserves,' necessitating validation drilling prior to investment. CONCLUSIONS 1. Resource Sufficiency and Logistical Viability: It is confirmed that the Southern Volcanic Axis harbors high-enthalpy potential (>770 MW) sufficient to cover mining demand by 2030. Average source-sink proximity (<100 km) validates the existence of a "Mining-Geothermal Cluster" optimizing transmission CAPEX via dedicated interconnection. 2. Dual Development Strategy: Two strategic autonomous development poles are defined: the Moquegua-Tacna Hub, where Calientes and Tutupaca fields supply the Toquepala-Cuajone-Quellaveco block (<60 km) ; and the Arequipa Hub, where the Achumani Project consolidates as the optimal intra-regional solution for Cerro Verde decarbonization. 3. Energy Security (Base Load): Geothermal is the only renewable source capable of supplying Firm Power with a Plant Factor >95%. This stability is indispensable for 24/7 continuous processes (comminution, ventilation), eliminating the need for costly storage systems (BESS) required by solar/wind intermittency. 4. Thermal Value Added (Direct Uses): Integrates thermodynamic solutions for the Puna. Direct use of residual heat optimizes heap leaching kinetics, concentrate drying, and camp climatization, merging energy efficiency with circular economy. 139
