Track 7: Andean Flagship Sessions

Figure 1 – Buenaventura’s historical production Over time, this long-term adaptive trajectory is reflected in the company’s production performance. As shown in Figure 1, Buenaventura’s historical production shows a pattern of continuity combined with periods of transition, including a gradual shift from silver-dominated production to a more diversified portfolio incorporating gold and other metals. The evidence suggests a dynamic process of adjustment, driven by exploration and asset transformation, that has enabled sustained production across different economic and institutional cycles. A relevant consideration in this context is that Buenaventura’s adaptive trajectory has developed within an increasingly complex regulatory environment. According to internal estimates, the development cycle of a mining project in Peru can extend to approximately 150 months (12.5 years), reflecting the cumulative effect of multiple procedures, approvals, and institutional requirements. Taken together, these elements suggest that Buenaventura’s strategic adaptation has been incremental and aligned with a long-term orientation. Continuous exploration, metal diversification, in-house technological development, and responses to structural constraints have supported the development and transformation of projects over time. This trajectory provides a basis for analyzing the company beyond a narrow operational perspective, paving the way for the discussion of broader forms of contribution developed in the following section. 179
