XIV CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL DE PROSPECTORES Y EXPLORADORES DESCUBRIENDO RECURSOS MINERALES PARA UN MUNDO MEJOR 86 Brazil with an area of 8 500 000 km2 occupies more than 75% of the South American platform, an old and relatively stable nucleus of the South American plate that remained preserved from the effects of the Andean orogenies (Almeida et al., 2000). The Precambrian basement of the platform within the Brazilian territory consists of cratons, with lithologic units older than 2.0 Ga, and orogenic systems (0.9 Ga – 0.55 Ga). Both are the loci of a broad variety of mineral systems that collectively define several economicallyimportant mineral provinces. This work provides a broad overview of the metallogeny of selected mineral provinces contained in these Precambrian tectonic units in Brazil, with particular emphasis on gold and base metals systems.
