XIV CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL DE PROSPECTORES Y EXPLORADORES DESCUBRIENDO RECURSOS MINERALES PARA UN MUNDO MEJOR 90 REVISE PAPER The geological and mineral potential of the Argentine Andes has never been in question; however, the political, fiscal and social aspects of the country have historically been complicated for large scale mining. Argentina has historically ranked low on the Fraser Institute’s LATAM attractiveness to investment ranking and hence exploration dollars and general investment for mining have gone into other LATAM jurisdictions such as Chile, Peru, Mexico, and Brazil. Despite decades of fiscal mismanagement and political turmoil at the federal level in Argentina, there have been more mining friendly provinces such as San Juan, Salta, Santa Cruz, and to a lesser degree Jujuy and Catamarca, where exploration and small- to medium-sized mines have been developed, especially in the precious metals and industrial minerals space. The only large-scale, open pit copper mine ever developed in Argentina was Bajo de la Alumbrera located in Catamarca province, which commenced in 1997 and operated for 21 years before being closed. With the election of Javier Milei in November 2023, fast forward to today and there has been an incredible awakening of Argentina as foreign investment destination, not only for mining related activities, but also for the energy and agriculture sectors. Argentina is a federation of 23 provinces with natural resources belonging to each province. As mentioned previously, mining is welcome in some provinces, so location matters, however changes are happening and traditionally nonmining provinces are seeing mining as an opportunity, and view San Juan province as the model to be followed because of the growth in the province over the years due directly to mining activities.
