Track 3: Environmental Stewardship

242 Figure 3 - Part of 7.7 MW peak power solar panel installation © VA Erzberg GmbH The electrical infrastructure for the trolley operation covers a major area of the mine and together with battery technology there is a potential for electrically operating all other mining and maintenance equipment like drill rigs, wheel loaders, excavators and wheel dozers. VA Erzberg’s roadmap to implement electrically powered mining equipment is heavily dependent on OEMs and their willingness to develop and provide electric powertrains for their products. The electrical power supply for the powertrain in mining equipment needs to be flexible. The powertrain should fit to trolley installations, to cable bound supply as well as to battery packs and should also work in combination. Where electrical infrastructure is not yet given onboard diesel generators still could supply the electrical powertrain. 2. TROLLEY ASSISTED HAULAGE 2.1 Electrical Infrastructure VA Erzberg operates a 10 kV grid which is connected to the public 110 kV grid via a company owned 110/10 kV transformer. The 10 kV main distribution supplies three DC substations which provide 900 V nominal voltage to the DC power lines of the trolley system (Figure 4).
