68 3.2 Regional settings The level of development status of the individual production or resource countries was determined in accordance with the classification by the UN. It should be noted that the term “transition countries” is no longer applicable and these countries have been transferred to a “developed” or “developing” category. The classification according to world regions was carried out in accordance with the classification by the UN. Through appropriate attribution, resource information from deposits of any economic blocs (e.g. European Union, Mercosur, etc.) could also be determined. ON THE DYNAMICS AND COMPARABILITY OF RESOURCES DATA To ensure comparability of resources, they were not recorded as (in situ) C-ROCK, but rather calculated according to their actual C-content. Since this resource assessment also included deposits that are not currently being explored but are merely suspended, yet still represent a potential or assessed resource, they were indeed included in this analysis. Consequently, resource data from various national or international institutions employed in this study can often differ significantly from the quantities stored in their respective databases. In 2013, Australian graphite resources amounted to only 0.97 Mio t. By 2017, this figure had already risen to 7.14 Mio t (Summerfield, D. 2018). Current projects of Australian companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange are projected to yield JORC-compliant resources of 31.5 Mio t of Graphite as of 2024 (Barghamadi, M. 2025). The present study (including additional deposits) already indicates resources of 50.4 Mio t of contained C. This simple comparison demonstrates that differing figures in the relevant statistics are not necessarily inaccurate. Global graphite resources (C-content) from producing companies, advanced exploration projects, and assessed but currently non-producing deposits amount to appr. 1,758 Mio t (2022: appr. 1,346 Mio t).
