Track 5: Cross-Cutting Themes

172 CASE STUDY The quarry considered in the study is located in Europe. The quarry produces multiple aggregate products with different size fractions. Figure 7 presents the flowsheet of the quarry, which shows various operations are performed at the site, starting from drilling and blasting to extract rock material, followed by material handling (loading, transport, and feeding), and a production process consisting of a processing circuit with multiple-stage crushing and classification processes at the crushing plant. At a crushing plant, a processing circuit configuration comprising equipment such as horizontal shaft impact crushers, screens, conveyors, bins, and splitters processes the extracted rock material to produce multiple size fractions of aggregates. In 2021, a total of 1.6 million tonnes of aggregates were produced. Table 3 show the production data, along with resource consumption and waste generation data at the site. Table 3 – Site data collected for the year 2021. Production data Resource consumption and waste data Product Percentage of total production Consumables Data Unit P1 12% Diesel 514670 l/year P2 11% Electricity 1467780 kWh/year P3 29% Water 10206 m3/year P4 4% Explosives 179500 kg/year P5 22% Lubricants 7698 kg/year P6 8% Rubber 12375 kg/year P7 4% AdBlue 1977 l/year P8 9% Non-hazardous waste 258 kg/year P9 1% Hazardous waste 5990 kg/year Note: Consumption of resources, such as metals, was negligible. Additionally, at the site, wood, plastics, and flocculants were not consumed in 2021.
