55 materials are increasingly important and essential knowledge of the basic composition of waste. In contrast to the processing of mineral resources, waste management assessments should be carried out before the start of waste recovery to ensure a clear picture of the knowledge of waste, for example about city infrastructure that will be demolished, including estimates of waste materials, types and quantities of materials to be released, and recommendations on waste management [4]. Assessment is the first step towards proper recycling and waste management. 3.1 Overview of waste and mineral resources in Slovenia In Slovenia 2024, a little less than 10.3 million tonnes or almost a tenth less waste were generated compared to the year 2023 (see Figure 7.). Of this, construction waste dominated at 7.3 million tonnes, the amount of which decreased by about 14%, or almost 1.2 million tonnes. About 1.1 million tonnes of municipal waste were generated in 2024, or 526 kg per capita, which is 2% more than in the previous year. Almost 284,000 tonnes of mixed municipal waste were generated, which is 2% less than in the previous year. Mixed municipal waste represented a quarter of all municipal waste, followed by paper and cardboard waste (18%) and biodegradable waste (15%). Nearly three-quarters of all municipal waste was collected separately or 391 kg per capita, which is 11 kg more than the year before [7]. In 2024, 386 facilities for waste recycling (52.3% of all waste generated in Slovenia), 180 facilities for waste recovery (23.8% of all waste generated in Slovenia), 10 facilities for waste to energy recovery (4.2% of all waste generated in Slovenia) and 3 facilities for waste incineration operated in Slovenia (0.7% of all waste generated in Slovenia). Waste was still disposed of and landfilled at 17 landfill sites (19.0% of all waste generated in Slovenia), 14 landfill sites for non-hazardous waste, 2 for inert and 1 for hazardous waste. In the future, the principles of landfill mining will gradually be introduced for the exploitation of old landfills. In the period 2000-2024, the Slovenian Regulation on Mining Rights for Exploration or Commercial Exploitation of Mineral Resources, to keep a record 20 exploration areas and 393 exploitation areas, of which 322 were the basic exploitation areas and 71 were enlargements of the basic exploitation areas. Number of exploitation areas of mineral resource deposits with a certain exploitation area and concluded concession contract/acquired mining right in 2024 is as follows [14]: - lignite: 1 - pozzolan-tuff: 1 - building stone-other: 6 - oil + gas: 1 + 1 - chert: 1 - limestone for cement and lime: 5 - geothermal energy: 1 - ceramic (ball) clay: 1 - cement marl: 2 - bentonite: 1 - fire-resistant clay: 1 - crushed stone-limestone: 21 - calcite: 1 - brick clay: 4 - crushed stone -dolomite: 56 - chalk: 1 - brick marl: 1 - crushed stone-silicate: 4 - quartz sand: 4 - building stonelimestone: 9 - sand and gravel: 17 - industrial dolomite: 1 - building stone-tonalite: 2 - sea salt: 2.
