98 ● Newmont (2022) reported they had achieved 4 years fatality free in their 2022 sustainability report by maintaining “a clear focus on mitigating risks that could lead to a fatality through our Fatality Risk Management (FRM) program, to identify the critical controls that must be in place before work starts”. ● Rio Tinto (2022) reported in their 2022 Annual Report that they were 4 years fatality free and that “Critical risk management (CRM) remains our primary fatality elimination tool by helping ensure that critical controls are in place and working where there is a fatal risk” (Sourced from https://www.riotinto.com/en/sustainability/health-safetywellbeing). ● Selleck (2023), who conducted 6 years of research on application of CCRM in construction, found that CCRM contributed to a 40% to 89% increase in hazard reporting frequency rate and sites where CCRM was implemented had 25% less HPIs. In 2014 the ICMM commissioned research on how to improve the control of fatal mining risks. This work resulted in the publication of the ICMM’s Critical Control Management: Good Practice Guide (ICMM, 2015). Since its publication, many mining, and other high-risk sectors, companies have endeavored to implement the critical control approach with mixed results.
