Implementation Of Peru’s First World Class Autonomous And Digital Mining Operation At Quellaveco Luis Sandoval Rojas STRACON, Lima, Peru (Presenting author: luis.sandoval@stracon.com) Abstract The implementation of Peru’s first world-class autonomous and digital mining operation at Quellaveco was carried out between 2019 and 2022 at approximately 3,500 meters above sea level. This project required a fundamental rethinking of conventional deployment approaches, integrating technology, operational processes, and workforce transformation into a single structured methodology. This paper presents how a combined technical and human-centered approach enabled the transition from conventional haulage operations to an autonomous mining environment. The methodology focused on redefining operational standards, implementing autonomous systems through the CAT MineStar platform, and developing a workforce capable of adapting to new digital operating models. A key differentiator of the project was the structured change management strategy, which included innovative training programs such as Clean Skin, Upskill, and Multiskill, designed to accelerate workforce readiness and reduce resistance to technological change. The results demonstrate that successful implementation of autonomous mining systems depends not only on technology, but on the integration of organizational culture, workforce development, and operational design into a cohesive and scalable deployment model. An effective methodology was developed and implemented to enable the deployment of world-class autonomous mining technology at approximately 3,500 meters above sea level, while simultaneously creating a pioneering model of collaboration with local communities that directly contributed to their economic and social development. The project was implemented in a global mining context characterized by the growing adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, where deployment is often fragmented and focused primarily on technology (Deloitte, 2024).
