Abstract The mining industry is facing a critical challenge in attracting and retaining young technical talent. This issue demands urgent attention, particularly in training new hires quickly and powerfully. While hands-on experience with real equipment is essential for skill development, access to such equipment is often limited. It is often incredibly difficult to give technicians access to functioning equipment to learn, practice, and be assessed. To address this, many training programs increasingly employ innovative learning aids designed to facilitate the assimilation of vital technical information. However, recent research indicates that these aids do not guarantee effective knowledge retention. Instead, targeted learning activities that strategically incorporate media technology are crucial for maximizing learning outcomes. Virtual Reality (VR) has traditionally been used by equipment manufacturers for demonstrations, but its application in training remains relatively novel. Often limited to cumbersome headsets, VR has not yet realized its full potential. Current research shows that immersive VR learning activities can replicate the cognitive engagement required in hands-on training, producing powerful learning results. This presentation will showcase successful examples of robust VR training applications. Augmented Reality (AR) enhances learning by overlaying digital content on real-world equipment. However, effective use of AR requires intentional design: real-life scenarios and problem-solving exercises that simulate on-site challenges, offering technicians and managers safe, hands-on practice. This presentation will highlight effective AR applications that achieve these goals. 3D Models offer tangible representations of concepts, significantly boosting retention and engagement. When integrated with structured activities grounded in Bloom’s Taxonomy, the use of 3D models can be strategically enhanced.
