These same projects underpin the global decarbonisation agenda, supplying the critical minerals needed for solar panels, batteries, electric vehicles, and transmission infrastructure. Yet many of the Indigenous communities living alongside these multibillion dollar operations continue to experience limited access to employment, infrastructure, reliable energy, cultural security, and economic opportunity. This paradox now represents a material delivery challenge for the mining sector, with direct implications for project sequencing, capital deployment, and regulatory certainty. As demand for transition minerals accelerates, the relationship between resource developers and Indigenous peoples is becoming a central determinant of project viability. The evidence is clear: when Indigenous rights and governance systems are marginalized, conflict follows. A global analysis of environmental conflicts shows that 95% have arisen since the 1970s, with Indigenous peoples involved in more than a third. Conflict leads to redesigns, resequencing, litigation, suspension of works, and most costly of all erosion of trust. At the same time, Indigenous peoples are asserting their rights with increasing clarity on the global stage. At recent UN climate summits, Indigenous delegations argued that the energy transition cannot reproduce the extractive patterns of the past. They emphasized that consent not consultation must be central to mineral development, and that Indigenous peoples must participate as decisionmakers, not stakeholders to be informed. For the mining industry, this is an opportunity. Projects developed in partnership with Indigenous authorities, built on co-design, strong governance, and early alignment of values, are more resilient, more culturally grounded, and more likely to obtain timely social and regulatory acceptance. The path to faster, lower risk project delivery increasingly lies in relational, cultural, and governance innovation, not just technical excellence.
