Track 8: Safety, Social Performance and Talent Management

2.1 Territorial Development and Sustainable Balanced Scorecard (TD-SBSC) The Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC) model, developed by Kaplan and McMillan (2021), represents an innovation of the classic Balanced Scorecard (BSC) introduced by Kaplan and Norton in 1992. The SBSC enables the construction of a BSC for an ecosystem—e. g., a mining district—by integrating the strategies of firms, communities, suppliers, local governments, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders. Its purpose is to enable win–win strategies that create economic, social, and environmental value for all system participants. The SBSC can be enhanced and updated in line with the latest technological and literary advances. Thus, the scope of the SBSC has been broadened by incorporating additional elements such as territorial development, shared value creation, social innovation approaches, cumulative effects, data-driven territorial development, multistakeholder governance coalitions, AI-enabled territorial diagnostic platforms, and digital twin models of mining territories. Therefore, aggregating these elements allows the Territorial Development and Sustainable Balanced Scorecard (TD-SBSC) to be applied to a mining territory (see an example in Figure 1), enabling the sector to leverage advanced technology for high-impact territorial and sustainable development, promoting smart mining territories.
